Rain, Rock, and Rope: Conquering Acadia’s Coastal Cliffs
October 3-6, 2024
OUR ADVENTURE:
The Keene State Outing Club’s passion for exploration led us to yet another unforgettable experience—this time in the rugged, awe-inspiring landscapes of Acadia National Park, Maine. From October 3rd to 6th, during the heart of mid-fall, we found ourselves surrounded by trees in their full autumn glory; leaves blazing in shades of red, orange, and gold. In collaboration with Acadia Mountain Guides Climbing School, where two of our very own friends work, we embarked on a weekend filled with hiking, climbing, and memories that will live on in our club’s story. From yurts to rainbows, crashing waves to crackling fires! Read on to relive the magic of our Acadian journey.
The Journey North
Our adventure began with a five-hour drive deep into the heart of Maine, winding through forest-lined roads dappled with brilliant fall colors until we reached Bass Harbor Campground. Our home for the weekend: cozy yurts nestled among the trees. As night fell, we gathered around a roaring campfire, warming ourselves, sharing stories, and preparing for the challenges ahead. The crackle of the fire mirrored our excitement.
Hiking Highs and Bubble Boulders
We rose early, greeted by crisp morning air and anticipation. Our first mission: the Jordan Pond to South Bubble hike. The trail wove through serene woods and rocky climbs, framed by the vivid hues of changing leaves. At the summit, we reached the iconic glacial erratic perched precariously atop South Bubble. Naturally, we each took turns trying to push the massive boulder—unsuccessfully, but not without laughter and determination.
After regrouping at camp, we headed out again, this time for climbing at South Wall. The view from the top was breathtaking, stretching out over the park’s rugged terrain, set ablaze with autumn color as the sun dipped low. The day faded into twilight, but the adventure didn’t stop—our climbing turned into a spontaneous night session, followed by a moonlit hike back to the campsite. That night, the fire brought us together again, where we reflected on our first full day of adventure.

Rising Rain, Rolling Tide
Rain greeted us the next morning, but we refused to let the fog and drizzle dampen our spirit. First stop: Pebble Beach. The tide crept in around us as we climbed over slick rocks, each step a thrilling test of balance and teamwork. We then tackled a wild challenge—climbing onto a sea-bound rock pillar and rigging a Tyrolean traverse. One by one, we pulled ourselves across the rope, suspended above the crashing waves, rain soaking our jackets and laughter echoing through the mist.
With the weather clearing, we made our way to Otter Cliffs. The transformation was stunning—sunlight piercing through lingering clouds, revealing dramatic ocean views framed by the vivid colors of fall. Rappelling down the sea cliffs into the spray below and climbing back up with water still dripping from the rock, we were immersed in raw, natural beauty. Just as we reached the top, a double rainbow stretched across the sky, a perfect capstone to a challenging and awe-inspiring day.

Reflections by Firelight
That night, back at camp, we circled the fire one last time. Each of us shared our favorite moments and most challenging feats—from the Tyrolean traverse to the unexpected joy of raisins with mustard and celery. Laughter, gratitude, and a sense of camaraderie filled the air as the fire crackled beneath a canopy of golden leaves.
Farewell to Acadia
The next morning brought a short, scenic hike to stretch our legs and soak in the last of the Maine wilderness before we headed into downtown Bar Harbor. There, we roamed the shops, grabbed food, and enjoyed the laid-back charm of coastal life before packing up and heading back to Keene State. Tired but fulfilled, we carried home not just stories, but strengthened friendships and a deeper connection to the wild.
Until the next adventure.
